US CPA Exam Scoring

The CPA Scoring System and the way it works.

When you are studying to take the US CPA exam, the scoring is one of the first things to comprehend. The test is scored on a scaled range of 0 to 99 and a score of 75 is required to pass every section. It is understandable that that number can be confusing at the start. It’s not a percentage. The percentage of questions that you have to answer right is 75. Your score indicates how you perform, after taking into consideration difficulty. This way there is a possibility of two candidates responding to a different combination of questions yet end up with the same score.

It’s Not Just About Getting Answers Right

The CPA exam is not meant to be a memorization test but an application test. You will be tested on Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Task Based Simulations (TBS) and occasionally on written answers. Each of them has a varying weight according to the section. In particular, simulations have a significant role. They are also tested in the real world and therefore tend to have a higher weight to score. When you prepare by doing only MCQs, you will be leaving some marks on the table.

Adaptive Testing Can Work in Your Favor

This is one thing that most candidates do not know at an early age. The MCQ section is adaptive. This is to say that the exam is graded according to your performance. In case you succeed in the first group of questions, the second group might be more difficult. It may be frightening at the time, however, it is a positive omen. More difficult questions provide you with an opportunity to have more credit. And so when the paper begins to get hard, then don’t put yourself second. You are likely to be headed in the right direction.

Time Management Is a Game Changer

Many students miss marks not because they are not aware of the answers, but due to time constraints. The simulations require more time and reading. When you take too much time on MCQs then you might be in a hurry to do simulations later. The clever thing to do is to schedule out your time prior to the exam. Training with a timer. Get accustomed to changing between speed and accuracy. The difference between a 74 and a 75 can be easily that balance.

Partial Credit Can Save Your Score

The best thing about the CPA exam is that it rewards partial knowledge. You do not require an ideal answer in order to get marks especially in simulations. Even when you have done the right thing or your reasoning is good, you are credited. So though you can never be sure it is always good to do something than nothing at all. It is these small accumulated points that make many candidates fail.

Consistency Matters More Than Intensity

Last, it is not a single exam to pass the CPA. You have to finish all areas in a given time frame. That is where consistency is involved. Regular study, following schedule, and not taking extensive breaks are more valuable than cramming at the last minute. As soon as you know how scoring is done, then it makes your preparation more targeted and less stressful. And that is what actually gives you a better chance in clearing the exam in the first attempt.
