dMAT vs APS for Germany. What is the difference

dMAT vs APS for Germany: What Is the Difference and Do You Need Both?

As a student from India considering studying for a Master's degree in Germany, you might have heard two terms that can be confusing: dMAT and APS.

They are connected, but they are not synonymous.

The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test and the process of verifying academic documents and qualifications is called APS. The dMAT is now an extra step in the APS documentation process for selected Indian Master's applicants.

What is APS?

APS India is the Academic Evaluation Center that verifies academic documents and educational qualifications issued by Indian institutions for students who wish to pursue their studies in Germany.

In the APS process, your academic documents are verified for authenticity and formal plausibility. After successfully completing the process, APS India issues an APS certificate.

The APS certificate is usually a crucial document in the German student visa procedure. But APS India is not responsible for admission to the university. The German university makes this decision.

What is dMAT?

Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardized academic aptitude test for selected students in India who are applying for a Master's programme in Germany.

It is not given by APS India but by g.a.s.t.

The dMAT is a new component of the APS documentation process for certain Master's applicants, starting in 2026.

The test assesses academic and cognitive skills, not just your university grades.

Therefore, dMAT is NOT a replacement for APS.

For students who are subject to the new dMAT requirement, the dMAT certificate will be an additional document in the APS process.

Who needs both dMAT and APS?

The existing dMAT requirement is applicable to applicants of Indian Master's programs who have completed their undergraduate degree in:

  • Engineering
  • Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics
  • Business / Management

The requirement is applicable to Master's applications for these applicants for the Summer Semester 2027 intake and future intakes, except for those who are eligible for a transitional exemption.

If your previous Bachelor's degree is in one of the impacted areas, you may be required to go through the APS process and the dMAT.

dMAT vs APS: What is the main difference?

The easiest way to understand it is:

dMAT APS
Academic aptitude test Academic document verification process
Given by g.a.s.t. Managed by APS India
Assesses academic and cognitive skills Verifies academic documents and qualifications
Produces a dMAT certificate Produces an APS certificate
Required for selected Master's applicants Required for applicants covered by the applicable APS procedure
An additional part of the APS documentation process The academic verification process

So, dMAT and APS are not the same thing.

For selected Indian Master's applicants, the dMAT is an additional requirement within the APS documentation process.

Is dMAT a substitute for APS verification?

No.

APS India will continue to check the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents.

The dMAT is just another part of the APS documentation for the impacted applicants. The dMAT certificate is issued independently by g.a.s.t. and the result is shown on the APS certificate.

The dMAT is also not a substitute for the university's admission requirements or anabin.

Is it possible to apply for APS prior to the dMAT?

Yes.

If you are required to take the dMAT, you can submit your APS application documents before the dMAT certificate is available.

APS India can start the document verification process. The APS certificate, however, can only be issued once the necessary dMAT certificate has been submitted and the result has been verified.

This can be helpful when you have a university application deadline.

What if your dMAT score is low?

A low dMAT score is not a reason for your APS certificate to be denied.

APS India is still verifying your academic documents and qualifications in the APS process. The dMAT is an extra academic achievement score for the impacted candidates.

Also, a dMAT score does not guarantee admission to a German university. Admission is at the discretion of the university.

Is it necessary to submit the dMAT prior to beginning the application to Germany?

Not necessarily.

However, if your undergraduate major is in a related discipline, you should review the dMAT requirement early. You can begin to work on your APS documents at the same time as you plan for the dMAT.

The first dMAT test in India will be held on 26 September 2026, and the registration process will open on 29 June 2026 and close on 15 September 2026.

dMAT and APS are two separate processes

The easiest way to remember the difference is:

dMAT assesses your academic ability and APS validates your academic credentials.

Both are now part of the Germany application documentation process for selected Indian Master's applicants.

If you're planning to study in Germany for the Summer Semester 2027 or later, check your Bachelor's degree field and the latest APS India requirements before starting the process. The official list of affected fields may determine the classification of interdisciplinary degrees.
