OET Test Format

  • Writing (45 minutes)
  • Speaking (approximately 20 minutes)
  • Listening (approximately 50 minutes)
  • Reading (60 minutes)
    Reading module contains of two parts, Part A and Part B. Part A has 30 questions, and the time allotted is 15 minutes. Part B has 20 questions, and all are multiple-choice questions, and time given is 45 minutes.
    Listening has Part A and Part B. Part A is a two communication between doctor and patient, and you will have to need to complete the case history of a patient. Part B you need to hear the person talking carefully and complete the notes.
    Writing section comprises a single task of letter writing. It can be an admission  letter, letter to a doctor, a discharge letter, letter to a rehabilitation center, a transfer letter to another hospital. You will be a case note of a patient with complete medical history. Total time is 45 minutes.
    Speaking includes role-play. The examiner will pretend as a patient,  this section tests your communication skills including grammar. The condition of the patient will be given, and the task you need to complete. Timings: 3 minutes to prepare on your role-play and 5 minutes to complete your role-play.

Scoring and grades:

The Sub- Test grading is from A to E in the OET examination. Fend below the explanation.

A Excellent Performance with high standard of English
B Very Good performance, i.e. meets the required level of professions English
C Good performance; however, does not meet the requirements of professional health care
D Moderate performance level.
E Very low performance level.
